Program Report Card

1 Education Goal

Every Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) student will read at or above grade level by the year 2008.

Current Status

Beginning with the 2004-05 school year, 14.4 percent were not reading at grade level. At the end of year three, the percentage not reading at grade level based on KCCT (grades three through eight and tenth grade) is 8.5 percent.

2 Funding Goal

The business community will raise $8 million ($2 million per year) be be matched by JCPS to fund the Every 1 Reads school-based educational programs.

Current Status

$7,568,424 committeed: for 2005, $1,860,170; for 2006, $1,476,431; for 2007, $1,839,274; and for 2008, $2,392,549.

3 Volunteer Goal

The Every 1 Reads initiative will be supported by 10,000 volunteers who will be tutors and mentors to students.

  • 7,600 volunteers trained

4 Community – Engagement Goal

Engage the community and faith-based organizations and groups in assisting JCPS in achieveing the goal of all students reading at or above grade level within four years.

Current Status

  • 84 Agencies have signed the E1R Declaration of Support and become Community Partners
  • 60 Community Partners have after-school programs for youth
  • 35 of the 60 after-school programs have been endorsed as Every 1 Reads sites. These organizations serve 13,160 students, of which 1,974 were reading below grade level.
  • Of the 13,160 students, 57% improved their reading scores.

The funding for Every 1 Reads is donated by the business community and held with the Jefferson County Public Schools Education Foundation. The chart below shows how these funds are used to achieve the program's goals.
